How tough could it be to mix up a simple rum & cola you ask? You’d be surprised!
Some of the best rum cocktails on my list are straightforward and easy to make, but it’s shocking how many bartenders make them incorrectly. Check out my list of favourites and see if you agree. Once you’ve nailed the basic recipes feel free to stir things up and make some of your own concoctions!
Cuba Libre. A simple rum and cola some would say, but it’s way more than that. Pour 2 oz. of Havana Club 3 Year Old rum into a highball glass. Add fresh lime. Done properly, the lime flavours should infuse a bit of acidity mixed in perfectly with the rum. Then add cola, a few pieces of ice and a lime garnish. Taste the difference.
Mojito. Again, made properly this classic drink has a refreshing taste. Made without the correct attention to detail, it can fall flat. The key to your success lies in the muddling process. In a highball glass, add 2 teaspoons of sugar, the juice of half a lime, 2 mint sprigs and a splash of sparkling water. Now muddle. Press down lightly in the glass with your muddler (wooden, plastic or steel all work, but make sure there are no teeth, this will over-muddle). All you need is a few gentle twists to get the job done. This releases all the right flavours into the drink. Add 1 part of Havana Club 3 Year Old and ice. Your drink should have a light and crisp taste to it.
Pina Colada. This drink requires a little more time and dedication. And a blender. But the finished product makes the added effort worth it. Fill the blender halfway with ice. Add 1 ½ oz. of Havana Club 3 Year Old, 3-4 oz. of pineapple juice, 1 oz. of coconut milk and 1 oz. of simple syrup. Puree. Pour in a glass and garnish with a slice of pineapple. Sit back, relax, and obviously share with friends.
Daiquiri. This is the real deal. The daiquiri in its purest form, and in my opinion how it was meant to be enjoyed. Pour 1½ oz of Havana Club 3 Year Old rum into a shaker. Add ¾ oz. of lime juice and ¼ oz of simple syrup. Add ice, shake and pour. Done and done.
Rum Punch. This list would be incomplete without a basic rum punch. This is a naked version of the recipe, so feel free to add a few bits and pieces for variation to make it your own. Flavour to taste. Combine 1½ oz of Havana Club 3 Year Old rum, ½ oz. lime juice, ¼ oz. simple syrup, 1 oz. pineapple, 1 oz of orange juice and a splash of soda in a pitcher or punch bowl. Mix well and add ice. Serve in hurricane glass!
